Ka Chun Chung (b. 1986, Hong Kong) is a Hong Kong/ London based artist whose
practice explores how objects perform and express through material
interplay. His work investigates the entangled relationships among
humans, objects, and space, with a focus on memory and anxiety.
Using mundane materials such as hook and loop strips, motors, and
abandoned objects, he creates systems of friction and sound to evoke
affective resonance and the body’s presence in absence. Through
sculptural and kinetic assemblages, Chung examines how objects act
not as passive artefacts but as witnesses, actors, and carriers of lived
experience, revealing affective attunement. His installations explore
contingency within networks of interdependent objects and distributed
agencies, drawing attention to the shifting and withdrawn nature of
relations.
Chung currently graduated from an MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University
of London. He previously studied in Bologna as an exchange student and
lived in Berlin for a year, where he focused on expanded painting. Since
completing his BA (Hons) in Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University, he
has worked as a freelance graphic designer. His work has been exhibited in
Hong Kong, Berlin, Athens, and London.

In this show, as the final task of this 2-year MFA programme in Goldsmiths, I created four kinectic sculptures that generate different sounds in a room. This acts as a prologue of my next project of creating an orchestra through objects to examine the performativity generated by movenment, sound and imagery.

The incorporation of the hook of loop strips is to investigate how objects can perform to generate an affective atmosphere and to get out of the control of us. The strips rotate, rub against each other and struggle to detach, this creates the randomness of movement to generate manifold rhythm and trigger multifarious compositions of sound. Such a dissociation from my manipulation is how I examine the performative agency and withdrawal qualities of those created entities.

“Attachment to Life”
Phoenix Gallery,
Athens, 2023
Around one month residency in Athens, I attempted to observe and know more about the city, wandering around the city, meeting people and sightseeing. Ended up I found the materials from the street and Lycabettus Hill that can have the complete view of the city. From domestic product to the plants that reflecting the weather, while I created four works related to Greek Myths and religion.

My deput Solo exhibition in Hong Kong that inpsired by a line in a novel “The Drunkard”, written by Lau Yichang. This exhibtion is about the objects as memory carrier of Hong Kong, especially the period of the 80s and the humidity of the city. This is the first time I paint directly onto the objects to examine the three-dimensionality of the painting surface.
